Hi all, Does anyone have any recommendations for gastroscopes. We bought a Medequus scope 2.5 years ago with the assurance it would last for ever 10-15 years. Just been faced with it’s second 10k+ repair bill and having heard similar stories from other practices decided it’s not fit for purpose. Any recommendations or anyone else looking to…[Read more]

    • Hi Kate, thanks for posting, I’ve contacted a couple of our Equine members, hoping to get some feedback for you early next week. Have a lovely weekend. Sarah

    • Thanks Sarah! I’ve also been given an name for an independent scope repair man who was recommended, so if he’s any good I’ll let everyone know as well!

    • Hi Kate, any feedback gratefully received. I received a couple of responses and general consensus was due to the way the scope is put together 2 x 1.5m, there’s always a weak area in the middle so you need to budget for regular (costly) repairs. Same experience despite using/trying scopes from various suppliers so wouldn’t recommend one over another.

  • Can I ask what practice management system equine practices are using and whether you’d recommend ?

    • Tx – yes we are looking at them – their invoicing and debt control system isn’t as flexible as I’d like but other things look good – our current one – Pro vet cloud – is terrible for stock control and we are running out of patience!!

    • We use VetIT and in general are pleased with it. As you say, there are some inflexibilities, and, like every other development team I’ve heard from, the tool I want is just around the corner. Booking work via the app is great and this handles stock so long as you put the batch against the sale (obviously). The stock correction at stock take is…[Read more]

    • thank you – v helpful . we don’t want a “frying pan and fire ” situation as some thought gs with Provet are great abs we have nailed our debt control with their system

has anyone had any problems with gastric ulcers claims ? we have had an insurance co decide the claim is closed as complete resolution noted on re scope – despite having months of time left on claim and being nowhere near vets fees limit. and another where vet Rec ongoing Tx as grade 1 ulcers noted but still symptomatic – but ins co have clause in…[Read more]

    • Not yet, but thanks for the warning. As you say, clinical notes need to be very carefully worded if this is the case.

    • hi Lindsay, only just catching up with messages as my app has been misbehaving. we’ve definitely started having problems with insurance companies – I now always warn owners before any score that if only grade 1 ulcers found they won’t be covered. we’ve also found where an ulcer claim is open and still has time / money left they will not pay for…[Read more]

hi all, we’re thinking of buying a new gastroscope so had a snoop around at London vet show but wondered if anyone has any recommendations? I’ve heard of a few issues with certain ones being unreliable and not switching on properly which is not what you want having starved a horse for 16 hours! thanks, Kate

    • we use Paul Duncan VESCO for scopes. bought a new one recently – make sure you ask re loan scope availability – we now have one with a decent pool of loan scopes- scopes are v temperamental creatures
