As you are aware, the status of Bluetongue in the UK is continuously changing, and given the recent spread, a number of BTV-3 serotype vaccines have been permitted by DEFRA. We are pleased to inform you that two of these vaccines, Syvazul BTV-3 and Bultavo BTV-3 are now in stock with NVS and available on licence. Licences are either geographically targeted general licences or specific licences, which can be applied for through APHA. General licencing is subject to risk assessment and vets should read the advisory note before prescribing any BTV-3 vaccine. As this is the first time DEFRA has permitted the use of unauthorised vaccines, the UK Chief Veterinary Officer asks all vets to record all vaccine use and inform relevant authorities of any adverse effects.

Please note, unlike other authorised BTV vaccines, the currently available BTV-3 vaccines claim to reduce viraemia rather than prevent it. For this reason, all movement controls and trade restrictions will still apply to vaccinated animals. Furthermore, you should not test vaccinated animals, as part of a pre-movement test in BT zones, until 7 days after their vaccination to prevent interference with BTV-3 monitoring.
